Prison: No Place for Old Men – Monday 10th December
December 10, 2018 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
A short workshop, which aims to explore the position of the ‘older’ prisoner in relation to health and social care provision, recognising how people over the age of 60 are the fastest growing group in custody.
Through the examination of Prison Reform Trust reports and documentation, as well as research, the workshop will examine the difficulties faced by older prisoners, and the scope for improved strategic approaches between health, social care and criminal justice agencies to work together to meet the need. There will be an opportunity to review the report ‘Social Care or Systematic Neglect’ and the requirements of the ‘Care Act’, further exploring gaps in resettlement provision for older age groups.
The workshop will also focus upon the health and psychiatric morbidity of male prisoners, considering issues such as preparation for release, support with social care needs, education training and employment, and the associated stigma of offending history.
The workshop will also include presentations from Helen Casey from the Open University on the Inside out Programme at HMP Durham, and Lynne Dolphin (Senior Practice Development Officer) from Durham County Council who is part of an Ageing Offender Initiative.
The workshop is scheduled to take place in Northumbria University in the Coach Lane West Campus on the 10th December 2018, 10 – 12.00hrs in room A003.
We look forward to seeing you there.
The workshop will be ran by Dr. Norman McClelland, Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University.
