Gateshead-Council

About

Gateshead is delighted to be involved in the North East Social Work Alliance, and we believe the Alliance provides a real opportunity to help us to showcase all that is great about social work and social work in the North East in particular. We have a great track record of working with our Higher Education Institutions (HEI’s) both to support the recruitment and training of new social workers, and to enable our social workers to continue to learn and develop post qualification, and the Alliance provides us with the opportunity to strengthen and support these crucial social work functions. Alongside the traditional Higher Education route into social work, in Gateshead we are also working in partnership with Step Up to Social Work; Frontline; and Think Ahead to enable post graduate entry.

Social work is a career that is often misunderstood, and can receive negative publicity. We believe the Alliance provides the opportunity to develop a strong and clear view of the important roles that our social workers play, in lots of different settings. We hope the website will enable people who are thinking of a career in social work, to get some real insights into the jobs we do, and provide a fantastic resource for qualified social workers looking to work and progress their careers in the North East.

We really appreciate that in the jobs social workers do, there needs to be a balance between work and home, and those of us who live and work here know what a brilliant place the North East is; we think the website will let you see and explore the great lifestyle you can enjoy in the area.

Gateshead in particular is a great place to live and work, being right in the centre of the North East region, with great transport links, a mix of urban and rural areas, and a wide range of accommodation options. The Quayside area in particular is a very popular local attraction with the landmarks, Sage Gateshead and Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art showcasing Gateshead’s fabulous culture offer.

Within the Council we have excellent working relationships with our statutory partners (such as health and education), and a thriving and vibrant community and voluntary sector. Exploring the Council’s website will help you to get a sense of the ambition that Gateshead has for its people, place and prosperity.
